Accelerating Sustainability Transformations within Organizations

In this time of rapid change and uncertainty, how are you addressing, the much-required sustainability transformations in your industry? Are you able to connect your sustainability goals to your business goals? To support this challenge, at Hellon we have designed the “Sustainability Futures Game” as part of the EU-funded CreaTures Project under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

Why it is important to imagine alternative desirable futures?

The game is a fruitful conversation starter for future strategy discussions in organizations. Although it includes educational elements (such as introducing SDGs, and sharing knowledge and experiences) its main purpose is the inspiration and pushing the “as-is thinking” with creative methodologies.

The decisions we make today affect how future generations live their lives. It is impossible to change the discourse of today unless we grow our capacity to imagine alternative and better futures for all. We need to create a sense of urgency to encourage behavioral change within organizations in order to reach sustainability goals.

Creative practices such as the Sustainability Futures Game, have the potential to support the development of new capabilities within organizations, enabling new ways of thinking and a more holistic understanding of interdependencies and long-term consequences of today’s decisions.

How does Hellon’s Sustainability Futures Game work?

The game consists of 2 main parts:

The first part of the game uses methods from arts and design around improvisation, storytelling and creative problem solving. The gamified approach immerses participants in future stories they can co-create and emotionally connect with, encouraging them to interact and engage in dialogue. The game produces a constructive platform for discussions, leading to a better understanding of future possibilities as well as potential conflicting views.

The second part of the game facilitates the backcasting method, to identify critical challenges and solutions to achieve the co-created desirable future. It results in concrete suggestions for today’s actions.

The game can be played in a physical or online format with a facilitator. It can be tested with a half day mini session with 8-10 people to introduce the approach, or as a one week sprint with more in-depth analyses and outcomes.

The key value proposition of the Sustainability Futures Game:
  • With support of creative methodologies, it triggers imagination of the participants to envision desirable alternative futures

  • It forms a holistic understanding of interdependencies and long term consequences of today’s decisions

  • Guide actions and decisions of today in connection to desirable futures

  • It creates a sense of urgency to encourage behavioural change within organisations
